Twelve persons walking on an old wooden bridge of An Hai commune over the O Loan Lagoon in the central province of Phu Yen narrowly escaped death as the bridge collapsed at 1pm on May 10.

Five of them managed to cling on to the wooden pier while passersby’s rescued seven others.

Authorities in Tuy An district have ordered the reconstruction of the collapsed An Hai bridge immediately, so that residents of both the communes are not inconvenienced.

The 128-meter bridge was badly in need of repairs for over 10 years.  This is the only link between An Hai and An Ninh Dong communes, also connecting to the Da Dia Rock Reef national landscape area. People with vehicles have to pay a toll of VND8,000 for crossing the bridge while pedestrians have to pay VND2, 000.
