Vietnam enjoyed success at the World Chess Olympiad in Turkey, with the men's team finishing 7th out of 150 and their female counterparts ranking 26th among 127 teams at the tournament that ended on Sunday.
In the final round of the tournament, the men's team beat Uzbekistan 3-1 with Nguyen Duc Hoa and Dao Thien Hai recording wins and Le Quang Liem and Nguyen Van Huy both drawing with their opponents.
Armenia won the gold medal in the category, with Russia and Ukraine taking the silver and bronze, respectively.
The women's team also performed strongly with an impressive 4-0 victory over Turkey with wins from Nguyen Thi Mai Hung, Le Kieu Thien Kim, Hoang Thi Nhu Y and Pham Bich Ngoc.
With a six win result, one draw, four losses, the Vietnamese chess women won 13 points, ranking 25th out of 127. Mai Hung and Nhu Y ranked at 17th and 15th place at Table 2 and Table 4, respectively.
Russia took the first place, followed by China and Ukraine.
Lam Minh Chau, the national chess team coach, said this is a success for both the tournament teams, men and women.
Team Vietnam lost one and won six games, including a victory over 11 seeded England.
Le Quang Liem played well and will return to the Top 2700. The women's team, seeded 28, played well in the early stage, but suddenly began losing to the American team, seeded 5, only to finish at grade 26.
In general, the two Vietnamese teams competed well and achieved good results. "So far, Vietnam's highest achievement in international tournaments has been at grade 9 in the men's team in Dresden in Germany in 2008 and grade 11 in women’s at Bled in Slovenia in 2002”, Chau added.
