For the last few days, mercury has soared to 36-39 degrees Celsius in Hanoi at noon and up to 40-41 degrees in parts of north-central provinces of Quang Binh and Nghe An.

However, another cold front is set to slam into the northern region by this afternoon, April 26, which might bring in thunderstorms and hail.

The cold front will quickly abate by tomorrow and the weather across the country will return to being hot and sunny by the weekend.

Right after hitting the north, the cold front will push the hot low pressure zone southwards, making Ho Chi Minh City and the southern regions hotter, although sporadic rainstorms will continue to occur in the afternoons and during night time.

On Wednesday afternoon, a sudden downpour in Ho Chi Minh City made it impossible for flights to land in Tan Son Nhat International Airport.

Representatives of Vietnam Airlines said two of their flights from Nha Trang and Hanoi had to be diverted to Can Tho Airport and could only take off for HCMC by 6pm of the same day.
