Several housing projects launched 10 years ago in Ho Chi Minh City have since been abandoned and unfinished.
HCMC People’s Committee gave 160 hectares of land to Housing and Urban Development Corporation in Truong Thanh Ward, District 9 to build Dong Tang Long New Urban Area in 2006.
The investor has yet to complete site clearance and infrastructure including roads, electricity and plumbing.
Some inner-roads have been surfaced with Tarmac yet most of the area is covered in weeds. A lighting system has been installed but due to inactivity, the technology has weathered.
Another housing project for teachers and staff of HCMC University of Technology was launched in Phu Huu Ward, District 9 in 1997. Only some houses were built while the remaining area lays vacant.
Khang An Residential Area is also experiencing the same condition. Ten houses have been built but lay dormant for years.
These conditions are apparent in many districts in the city including District Nha Be, Hoc Mon, District 2 and District 9.
Most investors have not been able to continue construction due to the economic recession.
Some investors have discontinued construction after already spending hundreds of billions of VND, said Nguyen Hoai Nam, Deputy Director of the city’s Department of Natural Resources and Environment.
| The Ministry of Construction and Ministry of Home Affairs have issued a joint circular starting January 2014 to deal with projects behind schedule. City and province people’s committees have asked construction departments to check and estimate status quo of housing projects. Provincial authorities will consult these estimations for their decision to continue the projects. |
