HCMC and Hanoi celebrate International Women’s Day

Chairman of Ho Chi Minh City People’s Committee Le Hoang Quan congratulated the city’s women on their learning and work achievements during his March 6 address for International Women’s Day.

Quan was speaking at a meeting of Ho Chi Minh City officials for the 100th Women’s Day and the 1,970th anniversary of the Uprising of two national heroines Hai Ba Trung (two Trung Sisters).

Every year city celebrates International Women’s Day (March 8) in conjunction with the anniversary of the sister’s uprising.

Last year the city’s women associations donated over VND57 billion to help 14,000 poor women develop their household economy.

They also raised more than VND4.7 billion (US$247,370) to build and repair houses for poor people, and offered over 10,000 scholarships worth VND6.8 billion to students with good performances at school.

In addition, the women’s associations have also taken part in programs to build happy families and campaigns to study and follow Ho Chi Minh’s moral example.

Organizations for women have continued developing, with 14 women’s clubs in the city, 28 groups against domestic violence, and 11 organizations that support victims of domestic violence.

At the meeting, the city authorities praised 100 women for their achievements in 2009.

An exchange session was also held between the meeting’s participants and several exemplary women, including Le Hai Lieu, chairwoman and CEO of the Duc Thanh Wood Processing JSC in Go Vap District; Dr. Phan Kim Phuong, director of the city Heart Institute; farmer Nguyen Thi Bay in Cu Chi District; worker Le Thi Ngoc Hang at Lega 6 Sewing Enterprise; and Pham Phuong Thao, chairwoman of the city People’s Council.

Hanoi’s Golden Rose

In Hanoi one hundred outstanding Vietnamese women entrepreneurs in 2009 were awarded Golden Rose Cups at a ceremony in Hanoi on March 6.

Attending the event, President Nguyen Minh Triet highly applauded the contributions of women entrepreneurs to the country’s development.

The event also saw the Golden Rose badge conferred on Nguyen Thi Xuan My, former head of the Party Central Inspection Committee, and two former Vice Presidents Nguyen Thi Binh and Truong My Hoa.

Organized by the Vietnam Women Entrepreneurs’ Council under the Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VCCI), the Golden Rose Cup Awards are held annually on March 8 to honor women entrepreneurs for great business achievements and contributions to the country’s development.
