The Ho Chi Minh City Department of Transport began allowing trucks and tankers to cross the cable-stayed Phu My Bridge on March 18, after opening to cars and motorbikes in September 2009.
All types of vehicles were seen crossing the bridge on Wednesday morning between Road 25B in District 2, and Huynh Tan Phat Street in District 7.
However, SGGP reporters found that many truck and tanker operators were unaware they could now travel on the bridge. Only a few of the vehicles were observed taking advantage of the new roadway.
On the same day, Nguyen Thanh Thai, general director of Phu My Bridge BOT Corporation, said that vehicles could currently cross the bridge for free, but that the corporation would start collecting tolls for all vehicles except motorbikes beginning April 1.
The six-lane Phu My Bridge, worth some VND2 trillion ($105 million), spans 2.5 kilometers and has a vertical clearance of 45 meters.
