A heavy downpour yesterday afternoon brought respite in Hanoi and other northern provinces after the scorching heat for the last five days.

The National Hydro Meteorological Forecasting Center says that a cold front will continue to prevail over wide areas in the northern region and some northern central provinces, bringing with it some heavy rains.

The mountainous regions have been asked to keep a close watch for hailstorms and tornadoes. The rain could possibly trigger flooding conditions in the Da and Hong (Red) rivers.

In the central and southern parts of the central region, the hot spell will linger on today, with the highest temperatures crossing more than 38 degrees Celsius.

In the southern region, southwesterly winds will strengthen, bringing moisture to ease the ongoing hot and muggy conditions. Showers will occur during afternoons and evenings.
