Cold front brings snowfall in northern region

A cold front with snowfall covered some northern mountainous provinces of Lao Cai, Ha Giang and Cao Bang on December 16.

This is the first snowfall hit Vietnam in this year’s winter season.

In Sa Pa Tourism Area, thick ice and snow shouldered over natural forest Hoang Lien National Park; meanwhile, cold front hit the region with the temperature to under zero degrees Celsius causing snowfall in Pho Bang town, Sung La, Ta Phin and communes of Meo Vac in Dong Van highland, Ha Giang.

Mount Phia Oac in the district of Nguyen Binh with 1,900 meters above sea level appeared thick ice and snow for the first time.

In the related weather news, the National Hydrology Meteorology Forecast Center reported: ‘ Melor’ storm entered East Sea with its strong wind of level 9 on December 16.

By evening yesterday, the typhoon was located at 14, 5 degrees north latitude and 119, 5 degrees east longitude, at 670 kilometers of Song Tu Tay Island. In next 24 hour, the super storm is predicted to move west southwards at maximum speed of 10- 15 kilometers towards Spratly Island.

The typhoon will be centered at 11, 6 degrees north latitude and 118, 0 degrees east longitude at 400 kilometers of eastwards of Song Tu Tay Island with its strongest wind speed of level 8- 10.
