Huynh Van Thuan is one of the Vietnamese artists to master the art of lacquer painting. Many his paintings have been displayed in the Vietnam Museum of Fine Arts.
The painter was born in 1921 in Ho Chi Minh City. He graduated from the Indochina Fine Arts College in 1944 and was a member of Vietnam Fine Arts Association from 1957. He joined in the army in 1944. After liberation and national reunification, he became Head of the Department of Fine Arts under the Ministry of Culture and Information (Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism now) in 1977-1979; Deputy Secretary General of the Vietnam Fine Arts Association in 1957-1983; Vice chairman of the Vietnam Fine Arts Association in 1983-1989.
The artist was granted several State awards and medals, including State Awards for Literature and Arts in 2001 for art works, Vinh Moc Village (1958), No title (1984), Lam sach thoc nop kho (Cleaning and drying rice before storage, 1981), Ngay mua o Vinh Kim (harvest time in Vinh Kim Village, 1960-1997), Vet Xich Xe Tang Giat (Tracks of the Enemy's Tanks, 1998).
The funeral ceremony will be held at HCM City Funeral House on Le Quy Don Street, District 3 on October 20; he will be buried at Ho Chi Minh City Martyr and Cemetery of Credited People in Cu Chi District on 22.
