Denilson, a member of Brazil’s 2002 World Cup-winning squad, suddenly terminated his contract with Hai Phong Cement FC in northern Vietnam on Tuesday due to injuries.

On June 2, the V-League club showed to the public their shocking contract – the former Brazilian international, who reportedly arrived in Vietnam with injuries.

Because of the injuries, he did not play for Hai Phong Cement in two matches on June 6 and 10. Denilson scored in his Vietnam debut on Sunday (June 21) after disappointing fans by sitting out the two earlier matches. He scored from a free-kick in the first half of the Hai Phong vs. Hoang Anh Gia Lai game, and played 50 minutes in all.

Explaining the reason for his contract termination, the former international wrote in his letter to the club that he failed to adapt to the Vietnamese League and his injury recovery was lower than expected.

Hai Phong Cement agreed to terminate his contract after a two-hour meeting Tuesday among club chairman Le Van Thanh, Denilson’s representative and doctor.

On the same day, the soccer player, who moved from Brazil’s Sao Paulo to Spanish side Real Betis in 1998 for a word record of US$32 million, left Hai Phong City for Brazil.

A source from the club said the sum total including salary the club paid Denilson was about US$16,000.

Hai Phong coach Vuong Tien Dung said Denilson has not recovered yet.
