Heavy rainfall across parts of the northern region on Wednesday caused flooding and triggered landslides in some places.
In Tuyen Quang Province, torrential rainfall triggered a few landslides in the mountainous district of Lam Binh. The road connecting Tho Binh Commune to the district centre was blocked with hundreds of cubic metres of landslide debris.
Tens of households living along the springs in Binh An, Tho Binh and Hong Quang Communes lost their houses and belongings, which was swept away by floodwaters.
The downpour also caused extensive damage to the Phai Phuon irrigation works and the Bo Mu suspension bridge in Minh Quang Commune of Chiem Hoa District. More than 80 hectares of rice and vegetable crops were submerged.
Heavy rainfall and strong winds blew off rooftops of several houses in Thanh Ba, Yen Lap, Ha Hoa and Doan Hung Districts in Phu Tho Province.
Flooding devastated 184 hectares of rice fields and seven hectares of seafood farms, besides also perishing almost 200 chickens.
Southwesterly winds brought in heavy rainfall across parts of the southern region, according to the national weather bureau. For the next 2-3 days rain is expected to continue unabated.
Truong Sa (Spratly) Islands and the coastal areas in the south-central region are currently experiencing heavy rainfall and strong winds.
