The two teams drew 3-3 after the two halves but Vietnam scored three more goals in the extra time, taking the ASEAN bronze medal and booking the final round berth.

Malaysia still led 3-2 when the second half was almost over but with 20 seconds left on the clock, Minh Giang equalized and the match had to go into extra time.

Giang netted his third goal in the match in extra time. The other two goals during the time came from Duy Khanh and Bao Quan.

Meanwhile in the ASEAN final, Australia defeated hosts Indonesia 3-0. The two teams and Vietnam went through to the Asian final round, staged in Uzbekistan on May 23-30. This is the first time for Vietnam to join the finals.

In the third Asian Indoor Games 2009 hosted by Vietnam last October, the home side lost 2-8 to Malaysia in their group stage in Ho Chi Minh City.
