A classic opera, La Bohème by the composer Giacomo Puccini will be performed by the Opera Australia Company at Hanoi Opera House on April 10.
La Bohème premiered in 1896 in Turin, and has been in the opera repertory since its premiere. It is the most popular Puccini opera, and one of the most popular operas overall. It is based on the 1851 novel by Henri Murger, La Vie de Bohème. The libretto of the opera was freely adapted from the novel, combining comic elements of the impoverished life of the young protagonists with the tragic aspects, and romance is woven throughout the story.
The opera work is led by conductor Jonathan Webb and staged by director Matthew Barclay.
The artists will sing in Italian with English subtitles at the show which is the 20th of the Hennessy Concert Series, which was launched in 1996 by the late director Wes Benson.
The Hennessy Concert Series was the first of its kind to bring world-class live classical music performances to Vietnam. The series has brought several top artists to Vietnam including pianists Jean-Yves Thibaudet, Lambert Orkis, and Lang Lang, violinists Hilary Hahn and Julian Rachlin, opera singer Barbara Bonney and others.
Entry is by invitation only. The show will be simulcast via a giant video screen that will be set up at the August Revolution Square for the public.
