Directors of the Taiwan-based Magnicon Wool Weaving and Export Company are absconding to avoid payment of staff salaries.
The company’s shop foreman, Hua Tai, stated that he was unable to contact either Lai Chun Nam, the company’s president or Chin Yu Wen, the company’s director.
On February 22, over 300 workers came to the office to receive their salaries and found the directors missing without a trace.
The workers claimed they had worked overtime for over 80 hours per month before Tet (Lunar New Year) to ensure timely delivery of goods.
After paying the Tet bonus, the directors had promised to pay workers the entire salary for January by February 10. However, when the workers came on that day for their salaries, the directors put them off by promising to pay on February 22.
A representative from the Labor Federation of District 12, Ho Chi Minh City, where the company is located, said that Magnicon currently owes salaries worth nearly VND1 billion.
The Ho Chi Minh City Federation has ordered the District 12 Labor Federation to list all the workers whose salaries have not yet been paid, in order to prepare the ground to protect workers’ interests.
On the same day, nearly 300 workers of Lien Phuong Garment Company in District 9 went to the company’s head office to receive their salaries for January.
They said that the company has yet to pay them for the salary of January. The workers contacted the company’s director many times but received no clear explanation.
By the afternoon, whilst explaining his situation to related agencies in District 9, the director pledged to pay the workers their entire salary.
