In a report presented by the Ho Chi Minh City Traffic Safety Committee, though the number of traffic accident cases decreased in the first seven months of this year, thanks to immediate preventive measures to curb accidents and congestion, traffic safety conditions still needed improving.

In July alone, there were 67 traffic accidents across the city, killing 61 people and injuring 25 others. Compared to the same period last year, the number of traffic accident cases dropped by 22 percent; the number of deaths fell by 18 percent; and the number of injured declined by 19 percent.

Compared with the previous month, the number of traffic accidents rose by 11 cases; the number of deaths surged by 12 people; and the number of injured climbed by six people.

At a meeting on traffic safety in Ho Chi Minh City on August 13, Nguyen Huu Tin, deputy chairman of the People’s Committee, asked local authorities to find the cause of the sudden rise in traffic accidents in July.

He ordered that measures be implemented to reduce traffic accident cases and if any district failed to do so, its chairman would be held responsible and answerable to the City People’s Committee.

He also ordered the City authorities to check-out every parking lot and revoke license of those violating regulations.

On the same day, he held another meeting discussion on the building of underground and multi-storey parking lots. He ordered relevant departments to present their projects so that they attract investors.
