A ceremony was held in Ho Chi Minh City on October 5 to mark the 4,344th National Day of the Republic of South Korea.

The event was hosted by the HCMC chapter of the Vietnam Union of Friendship Organization and the Vietnam Republic of South Korea Friendship Association (VRFA).

Developments in diplomatic ties between Vietnam and the Republic of Korea over the past 20 years have created a firm foundation for the two countries’ relations to grow further in the future.

Addressing the event, Prof. Huynh The Cuoc, VRFA Vice President highlighted significant achievements in the Vietnam–RoK ties, which went back 20 years.

At present RoK’s investments in nearly 3,000 projects were about US$24 billion in Vietnam, making it the biggest foreign investor with more than 35,000 Korean people residing here.

Other significant achievements were a two-way trade between the two nations topping US$18 billion last year, which placed RoK as the fourth largest trade partner of Vietnam.

Oh Jae-hack, RoK Consul General in HCMC said that the City, which is Vietnam’s major economic, trade and cultural centre, plays an important role in RoK-Vietnam ties.

At present, about 1.800 RoK businesses are operating in HCMC, generating jobs for 400,000 laborers in the City and surrounding areas.

More than 600,000 Vietnamese and RoK nationals travel back and forth between the two countries each year. Around 100,000 Koreans are living and working in Vietnam while more than 120,000 Vietnamese are residing in the Republic of South Korea.
