He was speaking at a meeting hosted yesterday afternoon in Hanoi, chaired by Deputy Prime Minister Hoang Trung Hai and attended by representatives of the Steering Committee for Flood and Storm Prevention.

At the meeting, Mr. Hai instructed related departments and localities in the central region to be prepared for the storm in advance and watch out for flooding which usually follows after a storm.

The most important was to guide the fishing boats out of harm’s way from waters near Hoang Sa (Paracel) Islands and between Hoang Sa and Truong Sa (Spratly) Islands.

Coastal provinces have been advised to direct boats to anchor in safe locations.

Local authorities should help residents quickly harvest rice, examine reservoirs and dykes and keep the public updated on the direction of the storm, so that they can be better prepared.

At 4am on October 4, the storm was located 580 kilometers east southeast of Hoang Sa Islands with wind gales of level 10 blowing at 89-102 kilometers an hour.
