Over 5,000 activists were present at the Youth Cultural House in HCMC in the Earth Hour Gala which was held by Sai Gon Giai Phong Newspaper, HCMC Communist Youth Union, the Saigon Union of Trading Co-operatives and others.

A slew of coffee shops and music stages in Districts 1, 10 and 12 turned off lights for Earth Hour.

The event was also attended by hundreds of businesses in the city including Unilever, HCMC Power Corporation, Protect and Gamble Vietnam, Vietnam Dairy Products Company and HCMC Urban Environment Company, and the Denmark Embassy in Hanoi and the Indian Consulate in HCMC.

Sai Gon Giai Phong Newspaper Deputy Editor in chief Ly Viet Trung said that young activists had accompanied the organization board to carry out projects of the campaign, significantly contributing in raising public awareness of environmental protection.

She hoped that they would promote their enthusiasm in other environmental campaigns to increase the number of environmentally friendly citizens.

Besides the lights-out event, many projects have been implemented during a month of the campaign. Notably, EarthBike has been hosted for the first time this year in which activists transport anyone who wants to travel by bicycles free of charge in HCMC downtown.
