In theory, the group remains mathematically open, but Vietnam are overwhelming favorites to advance. They could only be eliminated under an extraordinary set of circumstances: a defeat by nine goals or more against Cambodia combined with Indonesia beating Singapore 1-0. Such a scenario would see Indonesia finish top with nine points, while Vietnam and Singapore would both have seven points and be separated by goal difference after their goalless meeting.
In practical terms, however, Vietnam's place in the semifinals is almost secure. The more immediate questions concern how Coach Kim Sang-sik approaches the final group game, which players he rests and whether he uses the opportunity to give fringe players valuable tournament experience.
Vietnam enters the match in strong form, having remained unbeaten in 21 consecutive games. They have also yet to concede a goal in their three matches at this year's tournament. With home advantage and significantly greater squad depth, another three points would appear well within their reach.
Several regulars, including Patrik Le Giang, Hoang Hen, Tai Loc, and goalkeeper Dang Van Lam, missed training on August 5 after experiencing health problems. That could open the door for young goalkeeper Trung Kien to make his first ASEAN Cup appearance.
Coach Kim Sang-sik is also likely to rotate personnel across the pitch to preserve the fitness of his key players ahead of the semifinals. Vietnam's depth was already evident in their previous match against Indonesia, when several established names, including Xuan Son and Hoang Hen, started on the bench. Hai Long, Thanh Long, and Viet Anh took their opportunities effectively, underlining the options available to the coach.
The game could also give forwards such as Dinh Bac and Xuan Son a chance to add to their goal tallies and strengthen their bids for the tournament's top-scorer award.
Yet squad rotation should not necessarily weaken Vietnam. Players coming into the starting XI will be eager to make their mark, while the strength of the overall squad gives Kim considerable flexibility.
Cambodia, despite having no chance of reaching the semifinals, are unlikely to be passive opponents. They arrive with confidence after a 3-0 victory over Timor-Leste and possess energetic players capable of launching dangerous counterattacks. Vietnam will therefore need to avoid complacency, particularly if they make wholesale changes.
The other Group A match between Singapore and Indonesia at Jalan Besar Stadium could also have a bearing on the final standings. Indonesia, on six points, need a victory because a draw would not be enough, while Singapore can advance by avoiding defeat. Singapore could even finish top if they beat Indonesia and Cambodia take points off Vietnam.
History offers Singapore some encouragement. In their six previous meetings in the same group at regional tournaments, Indonesia have failed to progress from the group stage three times when drawn alongside the island nation. Indonesia are now at risk of missing the semifinals for the second consecutive tournament, a fate they have not suffered since the 2012-2014 period.
For Vietnam, however, topping the group is more than a matter of prestige. Under the tournament format, the Group A winners will host the second leg of the semifinals and, if they progress, will enjoy the same advantage in the second leg of the final.
That home advantage has proved significant in Vietnam's previous regional triumphs. They won the ASEAN championship in 2008 and 2018 after benefiting from favorable knockout-stage arrangements. By contrast, in 2022 and 2024, Vietnam played the second leg of the final in Thailand, losing in 2022 before winning the title in 2024.
That makes Friday's match strategically important despite Vietnam's substantial advantage on paper. A draw, particularly if Singapore defeats Indonesia, could leave Vietnam second in Group A and potentially set up a semifinal against Thailand, creating a less favorable route to defending their regional crown.
