Viet Nam’s 2008 UPU International Letter Writing Contest Launched

The 37th UPU (Universal Post Union) International Letter-Writing Competition for Young People (2008) was officially launched in Viet Nam yesterday. This year’s contest, themed “Write a letter to someone to tell them why the world needs tolerance,” is open to letter writers aged 15 and under.

Entries of no more than 1,000 words can be sent to the Tien Phong Newspaper at 5 Hoa Ma Street in Ha Noi. Submissions in English or French must include Vietnamese translations.

The contest is an excellent forum for raising young people’s awareness of the important role postal services play in our societies.  It additionally helps foster an appreciation for the art of letter-writing.

There will be nine official prizes and 30 consolation prizes awarded to contestants. The first and second place winners will be awarded Creative Youth insignia by the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union.

Created by the 1969 Tokyo Congress, the annual competition was launched for the first time in 1971. Viet Nam first joined the contest in 1987 and attracted millions of entries from youngsters nationwide.

The contest in Viet Nam is organized by the Ministry of Information and Communications, the Ministry of Education and Training, and the Tien Phong Newspaper.
