Traditional crafts festival in Hue kicks off

The biennial traditional crafts festival in Hue kicked off on April 30 with the theme “Bep Viet trong vuon Hue” (Vietnamese Kitchen from a Hue Garden), honoring Hue food and ornamental gardening.

The festival is being held in Ngo Mon Square near Dai Noi Imperial Citadel and Huong Riverside in Hue City and is being presented in two parts to display traditional foods and another to display ornamental plants. The festival will highlight the traditional and cultural characteristic styles of the ancient royal capital.

In Ngo Mon Square, hundreds of ancient traditional specialty dishes from the south, the north and Hue as well as native bonsai plants from all across Vietnam will be on view for gourmet and plant lovers at this biennial festival.

Besides, performances of Vietnamese traditional singings such as Cai Luong, Ca Tru and Ca Hue as well as art displays, street music, artistic kite performances, folk games, a chess contest and an exhibition of ornamental trees and culinary arts along Phu Van Lau Park and Nguyen Dinh Chieu Street have been organized.

The Hue Traditional Crafts Festival 2011 will be held in the ancient capital of Hue from April 30 to May 3.

Phan Thi Thoai Khanh, director of Hue Travel Agency said the festival has attracted a large number of tourists, many of which are domestic travelers. Thanks to the event, tourist agencies have seen a surge in the number of tourists by over 150 percent compared to this period last year.
