Torrential downpour paralyzes traffic in HCMC

Heavy rainfall beginning from 4.30pm on till late evening of July 3 caused severe flooding in many parts of Ho Chi Minh City, bringing traffic to a near standstill along several streets.

Just ten minutes after the rain started, sewer drains began to overflow on to Dong Den Street near Bau Cat apartment block. Many motorcycles suffered engine failure and by 6pm floodwater began to run onto nearby streets like Pham Phu Thu and Au Co in Tan Phu District.

By 7.30pm, vehicles could not move at all due to depth in flooding on Trinh Dinh Trong and Trinh Dinh Thao Streets and alleys along Tan Hoa-Lo Gom Canal in the above district.

Several motorcyclists had to wade across deep water in Hoa Binh, Khuong Viet and Luy Ban Bich Streets in District 11.

Bad traffic jams occurred on Cay Go Roundabout in between District 6 and 11. Low lying alleys along nearby Minh Phung Street saw the worst inundation. Han Hai Nguyen and Hong Bang Streets were also submerged under immense floodwater.

By 9pm, traffic was almost cut off along roads leading to Binh Tan and Binh Chanh District. People had to divert via longer routes using Vo Van Kiet Highway or Highway 1A to return to their homes.
