According to the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development in the Mekong Delta province of Tra Vinh, the province has more than 40 highly prone landslide spots along the Tien and Hau Rivers.
These spots are a threat to traffic infrastructure, fruit orchards, vegetable fields and houses of several families living along the riverbanks.
Places that are most vulnerable to landslides are mainly in Cau Ke, Cang Long and Chau Thanh Districts and Tra Vinh City.
Increasing landslides are the result of excessive sand exploitation, which is now out of control of local authorities. The relentless sand dredging has even changed the flow of the river.
