Heavy rains in Ho Chi Minh City June 10 lifted a recent heatwave, but flooded streets clogged traffic for hours.

The floods prompted traffic to snarl up on Chau Van Liem, Hong Bang, and Thai Phien streets in District 5, as well as Nguyen Huu Canh, major thoroughfare in Binh Thanh District, causing a slew of motorcycle breakdowns.
Le Duc Tho Street in Go Vap District was fully submerged as the area’s drainage system is under construction for upgrades.
Kinh Duong Vuong and Xuyen A streets in District 12 were also inundated for a short period by pumping machines from the Ho Chi Minh City Center for Flood Prevention cleared the way quickly.
Do Tan Long from the center said the recently-upgraded Chau Van Liem Street drainage system had failed to prevent floods because it has not yet been connected to drains along the East-West Highway.
According to the flood prevention center, the city now has about 96 areas at high risk of floods. He said the number would increase due several incomplete infrastructure works.
The areas that can expect to see worse flooding are located in districts 2, 6, 7, 8, 9, Binh Tan, Thu Duc and parts of Binh Chanh.
