The statement was made by Dr. Vu Hong Truong, chairman of Hanoi Metro Company, at the 12th International Conference of the Eastern Asia Society for Transportation Studies (EASTS) opened yesterday in HCMC.
Mr. Tran Huu Minh, traffic expert from National Traffic Safety Committee, said that a safe and environmental friendly public passenger transport system needs legal environment and appropriately developed infrastructure to facilitate residents' use of public transport means.
All solutions should work for travel of residents not vehicles, he emphasized.
Dr. Jaehak Oh, deputy head of the Korea Transport Institute, proposed that plans, designs and traffic operation should head toward users. Traffic transit centers should be planned in advance, traffic network planning should be done early and traffic system should operate according to most cost-saving methods.
Professor Dr. Shigeru Morichi from National Graduate Institute for Policy Studies said that in Asian nations including Vietnam, most of big cities have high population density so they should review traffic situation carefully, arrange pedestrian walkway, plan parking lots, draw urban traffic development plans and assist construction and operation of urban railway routes.
