A scientific research group of Ha Noi Pharmaceutical University (HNPU) has announced the research result of an herbaceous vine called Jiaogulan (Gynostemma Pentaphyllum Cucurbitaceae).
This precious herb has been founded only in Japan, China and Thailand so far. During their search, the scientist team, led by Prof. Dr. Pham Thanh Ky, Head of Pharmaceutical Department, HNPU, discovered the plant at the height of over 2,000 meters in northern mountainous provinces of Cao Bang and Lao Cai in Viet Nam.
The plant is said to boost lipid metabolism, keep a stable level of cholesterol in blood and help lose weight effectively without a strict diet.
It also helps stabilize blood pressure, prevent complications of heart, vein and brain, ageing process and stress, and bring appetite and good sleep.
Recently, the Ministry of Health has approved a project to produce Jiaogulan herb into capsule medicine, which is expected to be available in the next two or three years.
In late 2005, the Jiaogulan plants were used to make tea.
