Many families in Hoc Mon district in Ho Chi Minh City have not had a supply of clean tap water and used unqualified water from wells instead, reported chairwoman of the People’s Council Nguyen Thi Quyet Tam after an investigation of the rate of households accessing to clean water source on May 14.

Ms. Tam said that the rate of households accessing to clean water source is low. Moreover, she discovered that locals in Xuan Thoi Dong Commune have used smelly water from wells.

As per Hoc Mon District People's Committee, by April, 2015, just around 9,270 over 85,309 households in the district are supplied clean water or just 10.87 percent can access to clean water. The rates of these wards including Thoi Tam Thon, Tan Hiep and Tan Xuan accessing to fresh water are 2.13 percent; 3.05 percent and 5,09 percent respectively.

A statistic report shows that the district has over 85,000 wells and only 2 out of 229 water samples tested in 2014 are qualified for bathing and washing.

Accordingly, Ms. Tam proposed the district authority to check the situation thoroughly. In addition, local government should encourage residents to use water from clean tap water supplied by Sai Gon Water Supply Company.

On the same day, two supervision groups led by Ms. Truong Thi Anh, deputy chairwoman of the municipal People's Council and Mr. Huynh Cong Hung, a standing member of People's Council Committee toured to districts 12 and Can Gio to supervise fresh water supply in the two districts.
