Chairman of Ho Chi Minh City People’s Committee Nguyen Thanh Phong yesterday received Mr. Koji Koji Chiba, representative of Japanese Toyobo Company who wants to broaden investment in the city in fields chemical technology, medicine and unburied solid waste treatment.
According to Mr. Phong, HCMC discharges about 6,500-7,000 tons of household waste a day with most being buried. The city has studied application of some advanced technologies from Japan such as waste-to-energy.
Presenting the company’s waste treatment process, Mr. Chiba said that it collects all garbage without the need to classify them at discharge sources, handle and separate them into organic waste, metals and plastics. The technology suits Vietnam’s conditions as garbage has not been well classified, he added.
The company will use microbial fermentation technology to dry waste and make them organics before turning them into energy. Its waste-to-energy technology has been implemented in Singapore, the Philippines and India, he said.
Chairman Nguyen Thanh Phong asked the Department of Natural Resources and Environment to set up a plan to work with the company in the upcoming time.
There area many foreign companies wanting to invest in waste treatment in HCMC now. The city will select those with the best technologies to protect the environment and be willing to facilitate their investments, Mr. Phong added.
