Ho Chi Minh City records the first death of a HIV-positive man with monkeypox

The Department of Health of Ho Chi Minh City this morning said that a 30-year-old male patient hailing from Long An Province died of monkeypox (mpox) in the late stage of immunodeficiency at the Hospital of Tropical Diseases.

According to a report from the Hospital for Tropical Diseases, the patient was hospitalized on October 2 when he had blisters for 9 days and a fever. The patient confirmed mpox infection after the PCR results was placed in a single-person room when he was admitted to the hospital for treatment. Worse, he tested HIV positive as well.

Therefore, the male patient had severe systemic infection with invasive Candida fungal infection, Pneumocystis jirovecii infection, disseminated tuberculosis, then progressed into septic shock and severe multiple organ failure.

The patient was treated aggressively with antibiotics, antifungals, antituberculosis, mechanical ventilation, and dialysis. Although medical workers were making concerted efforts to save him, his condition worsened and he died after 18 days of intensive treatment.

Currently, the Department of Health of Ho Chi Minh City has established an expert council to arrive at final conclusions and officially report on this case to the Ministry of Health.

According to the Department of Health of Ho Chi Minh City, as of the evening of October 22, some 20 cases of monkeypox including 17 men and one woman diagnosed with B20 which means a patient has or has had an HIV-related condition are being treated at the Hospital for Tropical Diseases.

The hospital reported two cases’ conditions developed critically with diagnoses of sepsis, cellulitis, perineal infection, malignant syphilis, draining lung abscess/empyema, and skin infection.
