HCMC should build overall drainage plan for 2030

HCMC should immediately build an overall drainage plan for 2030 with visions for 2050, review existing drainage projects as they have been designed for too long and no longer suited the current situation.

The proposal was made by engineer Vu Hai, former lecturer of HCMC University of Technology and the National University of Civil Engineering at a seminar on urban flooding organized by Vietnam Water Supply and Sewerage Association (VWSA) and other sides in HCMC on November 7.
Sharing the same view, Professor Dr. Nguyen Viet Anh, head of the Institute of Environmental Science and Engineering (IESE), said that the city needs to have a long term overall plan on drainage, consider drainage and waste water treatment plans to suit climate change scenario. In addition, water supply, drainage and technical infrastructure plans should be integrated into urban plan and relevant agencies should supervise plan implementation.
At the seminar, participants said that urban flooding has become a major concern of the city, seriously affecting production and daily life of residents requiring new effective solutions.
For the past ten years, HCMC has spent VND30 trillion (US$1.29 billion) on anti flooding works. However, the effort has not brought high efficiency.
