HCMC seizes African elephant tusks

The Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology (VAST) verified on February 17 items found in a package enroute from France to Vietnam were elephant ivory tusks.

The Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology (VAST) verified on February 17 items found in a package enroute from France to Vietnam were elephant ivory tusks.

The tusks weigh 4.2 kilograms total and are listed in the 2012 World Red Book. They have been identified as African ivory with an estimated value of VND2 billion (US$94,860).

The tusks were found hidden in a 5.8-kilogram batch of clothing by the Customs Department in HCMC on February 12.  Its original destination was Hanoi.
