Ho Chi Minh City, in cooperation with the World Economic Forum (WEF) and Vietnamese agencies, will do its best to successfully organize the World Economic Forum on East Asia 2010 in HCMC June 6-7, said city People’s Committee Deputy Chairman Nguyen Trung Tin.
He made the statement during a reception for a working group of the WEF in HCMC March 11.
“It is a great honor for HCMC to be selected as the place to hold the forum, a significant event of the region and the world as well,” Mr. Tin said.
The WEF group said it is working with HCMC-based agencies to organize the event and that preparations are proceeding smoothly.
The fact that the forum will be held in Vietnam is of historical significance, as this is the first time such an event will be hosted by a developing country, said WEF Country Director for Vietnam Sushant Rao.
”Given that Vietnam is an attractive destination for international investors and the current chair of ASEAN, one of the world’s most dynamic economic regions, the event has attracted the interest of the world’s leading economic groups,” he said.
“More than 1,000 WEF member companies will attend the event,” Mr. Rao added.
In response, Mr. Tin said: “The event will be a good opportunity for us to communicate with leaders from others countries, international organizations, and economic groups. It will also be a chance for us to introduce the beauty, culture, and development potential of the city and the country as well.”
The WEF said on its website that the upcoming 19th East Asia forum would focus on several facets of the region's rising economic influence, such as how high-growth economies can improve their competitiveness through developing innovation-driven, green economies.
At the same time, the forum’s discussions will consider to what extent ongoing regional integration will serve as a basis for Asian leaders to obtain a greater leadership role in global cooperation.
