Nearly 5,000 young people were present at the launch ceremony of the 18th annual Green Summer Campaign in District 1 of Ho Chi Minh City yesterday.

A total of 50,000 volunteers will take part in the campaign taking place from July 17 to August 14 in 322 Wards and Communes of the City.
Volunteers from 13 other provinces of the southern regions, the Central Highlands and Laos will also join the campaign.
Each volunteer group will design tasks suitable to them and which meet local requirements. They will indulge in social welfare, children activities and rural development programmes.
Nguyen Thi Thu Ha, deputy secretary of the HCMC Party Committee spoke at the ceremony saying she hoped the youth would instill enthusiasm and creativity within people living in remote areas.
Soon after the ceremony ended, volunteers were seen in districts 4, 7, 12 and Thu Duc helping dredge and clean canals.
The same day, the Central Highland province of Kon Tum also launched the campaign attended by about 1,000 students, young soldiers and police officials.
The campaign with the theme “For Social Welfare’, will last for a month beginning July 16. Volunteers have already begun to repair and build houses for poor households and upgrade the traffic system in communes.
