Demand for fruits up sharply for Vesak, but prices steady

Though Buddhists are buying large quantities of flowers and fruits on the occasion of Vesak (Buddha’s Birthday), their prices remain steady.

High-quality Hoa Loc mangoes are sold at VND40,000-45,000 per kilogram, custard-apples at VND45,000-50,000, oranges at VND30,000-35,000, and grapefruit at VND40,000- 45,000.

Traders at Van Thanh Market in Ho Chi Minh City’s District Binh Thanh, said demand is up by 30 percent from the beginning of May.

Besides buying the fruits for praying, people are also using them to make beverages to beat the hot weather, Nguyen Dang Phu, deputy head of the Binh Dien Market management, has said.

Around 150 tons are brought to the market every night and there has been no rise in prices, he added.
