The People’s Committee of Da Nang City on Tuesday announced that it had instructed a thorough investigation of businesses in Lien Chieu Industrial Zone (IZ) and will crack down firmly on any business found polluting the environment.
The announcement was made by the people’s committee in writing to Sai Gon Giai Phong Newspaper in response to an article published by the newspaper on May 25 highlighting extreme levels of pollution in Lien Chieu IZ.
Van Huu Chien, chairman of the People’s Committee of Da Nang City has instructed the Department of Natural Resources and Environment to work with the Police Department, the management board of industrial and export processing zones and Lien Chieu District authorities to inspect all businesses in Lien Chieu IZ.
If any business is found to dump untreated wastewater into the environment, they will be dealt with severely, said Chien. By June 10 the inspection of businesses in the Lien Chieu IZ should be completed and a report sent to the People’s Committee.
At a press conference hosted on Tuesday, Da Nang city leaders said that pollution has worsened in some places.
The city has instructed authorised organisations to focus on treating pollution at the Tho Quang Dock, Khanh Son waste dump site and Dao Xanh Lake. They should also closely monitor operations of the wastewater treatment plant belonging to the Da Nang Fishery Service Industrial Zone.
