Customs officers at Tan Son Nhat Airport in Ho Chi Minh City announced on June 4 that they had detected and seized 1.62 kg of drugs from a Vietnamese woman as she was trying to board a flight to Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia on June 1.
Ngo Thi Phuong Thao, 31, a Vietnamese national, was caught hiding four bags of an unknown white substance in her handbag as she was proceeding to board flight AK883 to Kuala Lumpur on June 1.
Subsequent tests by experts at the Institute of Criminal Technology revealed that the substance was ‘methamphetamine’, a form of synthetic drug.
Thao has been handed over by Customs officers to the Anti-Drug Crime Branch Police in HCMC for further questioning.
Thao later told investigators that this was the first time she was travelling outside the country and that she had been asked by another woman to carry the bags of drugs to Malaysia.
The case is now under further investigation.
