Cold spell triggers chilling rainfall in northern region

According to the National Hydrology Meteorology Forecast Center, a wave of cool air triggering medium- heavy downpours, thunderstorms, cyclone, lightning and gusty wind is forecast to hit northern provinces on a large scale from this evening.

The weather condition will cover the Northwest, Northeast and North Central provinces and cities of Vietnam.

Average rainfall in the areas could maintain 30-70 mm within 24 hours, especially the northern mountainous provinces of Dien Bien, Lai Chau, Lao Cai and Ha Giang could gain over 100 mm.   

From January 16, the Gulf of Tonkin and the northern territorial water of the East Sea including the Paracel Islands are forecast to suffer the northeast wind of level 6-8 and rough sea.

Wind chill of level 6-8 and rough sea warnings will hit the offshore waters of the central and southern regions and the mid- East Sea.

Northeast provinces are going to face temperature of 12- 15 degrees Celsius, and the minimum temperature in the northern mountainous areas could drop to 8-11 degrees Celsius.  

Within the next two- three days, showers and minimum temperature of 12- 15 degrees Celsius will sweep through the capital city of Hanoi. 

From January 15- 17, provinces from Thanh Hoa to Khanh Hoa, from Thua Thien- Hue to Quang Ngai are forecast to maintain medium- heavy rains with an average rainfall of 40- 80 mm, even over 100 mm in some places.  

The same weather condition also hits south- central provinces and cities from Da Nang to Binh Thuan, with the lowest temperature of 21- 24 degrees Celsius and high humidity of 60- 97 percent.  

Both the Central Highlands and the southern region will be full of sunbeam in daytime, but rainny in evenings with minimum temperature of 16- 25 degrees Celsius and humidity of 40- 96 percent.
