Camkytiwa band to perform in Vietnam

A multinational band featuring traditional music will give their first performance in the Ho Chi Minh City Conservatory of Music on May 14.

A multinational band featuring traditional music will give their first performance in the Ho Chi Minh City Conservatory of Music on May 14.

The band quartet includes Vietnamese French singer Huong Thanh, Chinese erhuist Yan Li, Japanese kotoist Etsuko and Korean geomungo player E’Joung Ju.

They will perform folk songs from their countries, such as Vietnamese tunes by Ly Qua Cau, Ly Cay Khe, Ly Chim Quyen, Ho Cong Chua Ben Tre, Japan’s Hototogisu-Rossignol and Sakura, South Korean hits Chulgang and Arirang and “Why are the flowers so red” and “Mo Li Hoa” from China.

The band was established by Huong Thanh, daughter of the cai luong artist Huu Phuoc and younger sister of singer Huong Lan.

The name Camkytiwa is a combination of four Vietnamese words: Cam (Music), Ky (Chess), Thi (Poetry) and Hoa (Painting) which are regarded as the four main features of a feudal intellectual.

The band has won the hearts of music lovers around the world by their modern performing style based on traditional music.
