The Department of Food Hygiene and Safety said October 12 that 103.66 tons out of 10.2 million tons of foods imported this year do not meet quality standards.

After inspecting 338,465 food companies, the department has found 76,049 companies violating regulations on food hygiene and safety, and fined them over VND8.6 billion (US$452,600).
Some 260 violators have been suspended from operation, 700 food products have been suspended from distribution, over 1,900 products have been destroyed, and 105 violators have been transferred to relevant agencies for investigation.
About 15 percent of 32,212 food samples tested don’t meet quality standards. Most of them contain additives that are unsafe, and containers storing them are unclean and contaminated with dangerous bacteria.
