After the super Typhoon Mangkhut lashed the northern parts of Luzon Island as it heads west into the East Sea and toward southern China.
Weather forecaster said the super Typhoon Mangkhut will bring gale-force winds and heavy downpours to the northern province of Quang Ninh’s Mong Cai District.
Deputy head of the Vietnam Meteorological and Hydrological Administration Le Thanh Hai said that the typhoon is still strong with the winds of up to level of 13-14 and gust up to force 16-17 landing in China’s southwest coastal area on September 16 and moving to the border crossing between Vietnam and China. The storm is on target to hit northwest of China slowing 30 kilometers per hour with the winds of 14 levels and gust up to 17.
Due to the influence of the cold air stream, the East Sea including Hoang Sa archipelago will experience rough seas with ferocious winds to category 11-12 levels and 14-15 level near the storm’s eye. Within 24 to 48 hours next, the storm will make a landfall in the southern province of Guangzhou in China and it will weaken to a tropical depression after coming ashore.
Accordingly, the northern province of Quang Ninh will experience gust over force eight to ten on September 17 while the northern provinces of Lang Son, Cao Bang , Hai Phong, Bac Giang, Bac Kan will have winds up to level 6 to 9.
Weather forecasters said from September 17 to 19, storm will bring torrential rains to several parts of northern and northern central. Worse, in these days, flood is predicted to happen in the upstream of Hong - Thai Binh – Ma rivers. The northern provinces of Quang Ninh, Lang Son, Cao Bang, Bac Kan , Ha Giang, Lao Cai, Yen Bai, Son La, Hoa Binh are likely to have flash flood and landslides.
In yesterday meeting on the typhoon, participants said local governments should take heed to evacuate residents in high-risk areas and adopt safety measures for water reservoirs. Administrations from the northern province of Quang Ninh to Nghe An took safety measures for boats, and ordered evacuation of people in coastal areas and low areas to safer shelters.
Deputy Head of the Vietnam Disaster Management Authority Nguyen Truong Son warned not to neglect the typhoon though it weakened.
Head of the Central Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention and Control Nguyen Xuan Cuong yesterday sent a dispatch to the steering committee for natural disaster and rescue in cities and provinces as well as ministries urging to take measures preparing for the typhoon landfall.
