Vietnam & Iceland to urge early EFTA signing

Vietnamese State President Truong Tan Sang had a talk with Iceland's President Ólafur Ragnar Grímsson on his four day visit to Vietnam starting November 4.

At the meeting, Vietnamese president thanked for Iceland as well as member countries of European Free Trade Association (EFTA) and hoping that Iceland would urge early Free Trade Agreement (FTA) negotiation between two countries.

President Sang suggested two countries step to research ability of negotiating and signing cooperation projects featuring on education and training sector. Besides, Iceland would support Vietnam in training experts in the fields of seafood, energy-intensive method, environment; and exchange experiences about social welfare, sexual equality, help children and disabled people.

Mr. Ólafur Ragnar Grímsson said: “This visit aims to develop bilateral cooperation especially in exploitation of natural resources for economic growth".

Iceland readies to support Vietnam in energy -using industry, adding that Iceland will continue to provide scholarships for Vietnamese students in the time ahead. 

Besides, Iceland will also support Vietnam in integration into the world’s economy. 

Vietnamese President and Iceland's president also discussed about key problems, aiming to attract the invesment in the region and the world’s countries. Vietnam thanked for Iceland’s support in participating in United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC), the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) and the United Nation Security Council in the period of 2020- 2021.

On the occasion, State President Truong Tan Sang and President Ólafur Ragnar Grímsson witnessed the signing ceremony in thermoelectrical cooperation between Ministry of Industry and Trade of Vietnam and Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Iceland, and cooperative projects between Hanoi National University and Reykjavik University.

On the same day, Mr.Ólafur Ragnar Grímsson also had meetings with the General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam Nguyen Phu Trong, Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung and Chairman of National Assembly of Vietnam Nguyen Sinh Hung.
