Stocks rise third day

Vietnam’s benchmark VN-Index managed to maintain rising momentum for the third consecutive trading session despite a strong selling pressure on March 15.

The gauge of 305 companies and five mutual funds listed on the Ho Chi Minh City Stock Exchange grew 1.84 per cent, or 7.99 points, to close at 441.85 points.

Across the benchmark, 223 stocks moved forwards, 45 retreated, while 42 remained unchanged.

Trading volume on the city bourse today jumped to a two-week high with more than 105.7 million shares changing hands at a total value of VND1.67 trillion.

Saigon Thuong Tin Joint Stock Commercial Bank or Sacombank (STB) was the most active share in volume with 6.99 million shares changing hands.

The runner-up was Military Commercial Joint Stock Bank (MBB) with 5.27 million shares.

Vietnam Commercial Joint Stock Export Import Bank or Eximbank (EIB) tagged along with 5.25 million shares traded.

Biggest winners on the city bourse included Hoi An Tourist Service Joint Stock (HOT), Kinh Bac City Development Share Holding Corporation (KBC), Ha Tien 1 Cement Joint Stock Company  (HT1) and Thien Long Group Corporation (TLG).

Basa Joint Stock Company (BAS) gave up 9.09 per cent to close at VND1,000.

Bien Hoa Packaging Joint Stock Company (SVI) went down three straight days, reducing 4.93 per cent to close at VND19,300.

Sieu Thanh Joint Stock Corporation (ST8) and Vincom Joint Stock Company (VIC) both slumped 4.76 per cent to close at VND12,000, and VND100,000 respectively.

The VN30 Index - a free-float adjusted, market cap-weighted index of 30 stocks with the highest market value and liquidity on the exchange – hiked 11.59 points, or 2.36 per cent, to end at 502.82. Among its 30 members, 26 stocks gained, 3 retreated, and 1 remained unmoved.

Hanoi’s HNX-Index of the smaller bourse in the north salvaged 4.2 per cent, or 2.91 points, to close at 72.19 points with 234 winners, 52 losers, and 46 stocks treaded water. More than 125.88 million shares changed hands at a total value of VND1.48 trillion.

The UPCoM-Index of unlisted shares rallied 0.32 per cent, or 0.11 points, to close at 34.61 points. A total of 1,372,458 shares changed hands at VND52.73 billion.
