State funeral held for former President Vo Chi Cong

A State funeral was organized Monday in Ho Chi Minh City for former President of the State Council Vo Chi Cong after solemn memorial ceremonies of him were held early morning in the city, Hanoi and his home province of Quang Nam.

The former leader passed away at the age of 99 in HCM City Sep 8.

Monday’s solemn memorial ceremony in the city was held at the Reunification Palace, and attended by Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong, President Truong Tan Sang, Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung, National Assembly Vice Chairwoman Tong Thi Phong, and Vietnam Fatherland Front President Huynh Dam, together with former leaders of the country and representatives of HCM City, Hanoi and Quang Nam.

Party General Secretary Trong, head of the funeral board, delivered a funeral oration, looking back on the former State leader’s life of 99 years and revolutionary career with 76 years of Party membership.

Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc said that more than 700 delegations, including tens of thousands of people, have paid tribute and sent wreaths of flowers and messages of condolence via the solemn memorial ceremonies in HCM City, Hanoi and Quang Nam.

Mr. Phuc added over 50 foreign and diplomatic corps delegations have also paid tribute to Mr. Cong, including a Lao delegation led by Deputy Prime Minister Asang Laoly.

The former State President was buried at the Ho Chi Minh City Cemetery. Along the streets between the Reunification Palace and the cemetery, thousand of residents stood to pay the last tribute to him.
