Sapa faces serious water shortage due to prolonged hot weather

The popular tourist haunt of Sa Pa in the northern province of Lao Cai is facing serious fresh water shortage because of prolonged hot weather though the country’s holiday season is going to start.

The town’s severe water crisis hardly meet the increasing demand for clean water for tourist-related facilities.
Many households have no choice but to buy a cubic meter of fresh water at VND100,000- VND350,000 while some hotels and restaurant pay VND500,000 ($21) for a cubic meter of fresh water.
As the water level of Bac waterfall and other lakes have fallen due to prolonged drought, water plant in the tourist town is unable to provide enough water for residents.
However, residents complained of the construction of many hydropower plants at the source of Bac waterfall. The number of hotels and tourist facilities has increased massively and more and more travelers flock to the town whereas facilities can’t keep pace with increased demand.
Director of the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism Ha Van Thang said that the Urban Environment Company will use its vehicles to bring water to the town and the provincial People’s Committee will cover transportation fee.
The Department directed restaurants and hotels to refuse bookings at the time when water resources have been reduced.
