Health authorities in the northern province of Thanh Hoa have ordered a restaurant to compensate VND500 million (US$24,000) for providing toxic food to workers of the Hong Fu Shoe Company last March.

Nguyen Cong Khan, head of the Food Hygiene and Safety Department under the Ministry of Health, stated this on May 19. Two hours after eating lunch, hundreds of workers of the Hong Fu Shoe Company were rushed to nearby hospitals for food poisoning.

After eating rice, chicken cooked with sauce, fried cabbage and soup, workers began to vomit, complaining of pain in their belly, dizziness and breathing failure.

Soon after hearing the decision of the health authorities, the owner shut his restaurant and fled the province.
