At a meeting to discuss medical insurance for HIV patients for the period 2012-2020, the Vietnam Administration of HIV/AIDS Control said that only 15 percent of HIV infected people have medical insurance cards in Vietnam.

The meeting was held by the Ministry of Health in Hanoi on May 17. As per the Law on HIV/AIDS prevention and control, HIV infected patients will be covered by the Medical Insurance Fund.
The Ministry also stipulates that cost of medicines for HIV people will be paid for from the fund. However, a survey showed that only 15 percent of HIV infected people have health insurance.
The target for 2015-2020 is that more than 70-80 percent of HIV people get covered by health insurance to access better treatment services.
Until May this year, the country had registered 279 medical units for HIV outpatients while more than 210,000 HIV people and around 54,300 AIDS patients are still in need of insurance coverage.
