The 42nd International Letter Writing Competition for Young People was launched by the Universal Postal Union (UPU) at the Nguyen Du Junior High School in Hanoi on November 1 under the theme ‘Write a letter to someone telling why water is a precious natural resource’.
The annual competition aims to raise awareness among young people of an important global social issue, while strengthening solidarity and friendship among nations, promoting participants’ linguistic capability as well as deepening their understanding on the role that post and telecommunication sector plays in a person’s daily life and the development of society.
The competition is being held jointly by the Ministries of Information and Communications, Education and Training, Natural Resources and Environment, in conjunction with the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union, the Vietnam Post and Telecommunications Corporation and the Youth Pioneers Newspaper.
A new feature in this year’s competition is that competitors can write letters in English or French along with Vietnamese translation. Entries should be in prose in 800 words and sent to the organizers from November 5, 2012 to March 8, 2013.
The event organizers will give one first, three second, five third and several encouragement prizes. The first prize winning entry from Vietnam will be sent to participate in the International Competition.
