A delegation led by Le Hoang Quan, Chairman of the People’s Committee of Ho Chi Minh City, paid a visit and offered gifts to revolutionary units in Ben Tre Province on January 7.
The delegation offered flowers and incense at the Nguyen Thi Dinh Commemorative Area of the revolutionary heroine and gave 300 presents worth VND300, 000 to each disadvantaged person.
Nguyen Thi Thu Ha, member of CPV Central Committee and Deputy Secretary of the HCMC Party Committee offered Tet gifts to poor households in District 10 and Hoc Mon District on the same day.
She praised the achievements of the poverty-alleviation program, and the urbanization and socio-economic development in Ba Diem Commune of Hoc Mon District. She asked local authorities to continue to take care of the poor and help their children go to school.
She then visited the family of soldier Bui Trong Dan who is on assignment on Truong Sa Island and To Ha’s family, a disadvantaged Chinese-Vietnamese household in District 10.
On the evening of January 7, the HCMC People’s Committee organized a gathering for nearly 700 Overseas Vietnamese who returned to their homeland to celebrate Tet, from 52 countries across the world.
Since the beginning of this year, the amount of overseas national currency exchange has reached over US$9 billion. Ho Chi Minh City accounts for 60 percent of the total overseas national currency.
According to the HCMC Police Entry and Exit Management Department, the city is seeing 5,000 Overseas Vietnamese returning back to their homeland and 500 people have now been granted a Vietnamese citizenship.
The Association for Liaison for Overseas Vietnamese in Ho Chi Minh City (ALOV-HCMC) has mobilized Overseas Vietnamese to contribute nearly VND12.7 billion (US$570,000) to support charitable activities and victims of natural disasters and floods.
Additionally, a sponsored concert organized on Le Thi Rieng Park in District 10 on December 7 helped raise more than VND11.8 billion for disadvantaged families in HCMC for Tet.
The 7th Lawrence S.Ting Charity Walk collected more than VND2.3 billion to support charitable funds in District 4, the HCMC Television and the HCMC Sports Talent Support Fund.
More than 13,500 people took part in the annual charity walk organized by Phu My Hung Joint Venture Company in association with the people’s committees of Districts 7, 8 and Nha Be and Binh Chanh Districts on January 7.
The Department of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs cooperated with the Department of Health and HD Bank to provide free medicines, medical care and free Tet gifts to more than 1,100 patients in the Tan Dinh Mental Centre in Tan Uyen District of Binh Duong Province on January 7.
The HCMC Fatherland Front Committee also handed 1,100 Tet gifts and VND1 billion to disadvantaged people in An Giang Thanh Hoa and Nghe An Provinces.
