Gold sharply drops

The price of gold in Vietnam sank by VND200,000 a tael (1.2 ounces) on May 12 due to a sharp fall in global price as investors sold off to avert risks.

Sacombank Jewelry Company bought the metal at VND37.4 million and sold at VND37.47 million as of 9 am local time.

Saigon Jewelry Company, the biggest gold shop in Vietnam, purchased gold at VND37.38 million and sold at VND37.48 million at the same time.

Meanwhile, Hanoi-based Phu Quy Jewelry bought SJC-brand gold at VND37.36 million and sold at VND37.47 million as of 10:20 am local time.

Internationally, commodities plummeted as investors expected that Greece would be unlikely to avoid bankruptcy. A weaker euro boosted the US dollar, causing the precious metal to decline.

Gold futures for June delivery fell as much as $15.5 an ounce, or 1 percent, to close at $1,501.4 an ounce on the Comex in New York.

In Asia, the precious metal moved wildly this morning. Gold for immediate delivery was traded at $1,505.7 an ounce as of 10:25 am Vietnamese time, and tended to escalate.

The US Dollar Index, a six-major-currency gauge against the greenback’s value, rose to 75.308 from 74.7 in the previous trading session.

Correction also happened on fuel market. Crude oil closed below $100 a barrel, while gasoline fell by 8 percent after CME Group suspended trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange and raised trading limits of specific contracts. In addition, a report by the US Energy Department showed that oil reserves rose by 3.78 million barrels to 370.3 million barrels last week, whereas demand dropped by 0.9 percent to 18.2 million barrels a day, the lowest level since September 2009.

Crude oil futures for June settlement lost as much as $5.67 a barrel, or 5.5 percent, to close at $98.21 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Earlier, crude oil sank to $97.5 a barrel.

On the foreign exchange market, the interbank US dollar exchange rate continued to decrease by VND5 per dollar to VND20,693.

State-owned Vietcombank bought the greenback at VND20,550, and sold at VND20,630, unchanged as of the previous day. Eximbank purchased dollars at VND20,520-20,550, and sold at VND20,630. Sacombank quoted the rate at VND20,510-20,530 for buying and VND20,630 for selling.
