While local authorities, activists and businesses are joining hands to help flood hit residents in Quang Ninh province overcome flooding aftermaths, heavy rains spread to damage many other areas in the northern region on Saturday.
Secretary of Quang Ninh Party Committee Nguyen Van Doc asked all civil servants to work as normal at the weekend to repair flooding consequences.
The province’s Ho Chi Minh Communist Union Committee mobilized thousands of union members and young activists to help residents clean up their houses and surrounding areas.
Tens of relief delegations from other provinces and cities have come to Quang Ninh and provided locals with food and other necessary items, reported the province People’s Committee.
Tuan Chau Group in Ha Long city has provided free accommodations together with food to homeless people due to the flooding in Tuan Chau tourist site.
Chairman of the group Dao Hong Tuyen said that they had 1,000 rooms which could receive 10,000 people.
Downpour triggered flooding has caused VND2 trillion (US$92.02 million) in damage with the worst hit being coal industry in the province as of August 1. Vietnam National Coal and Mineral Industries Group have strived to pump waters out from coal mines.
The provincial Steering Committee for Search and Rescue said that all 1,500 stranded tourists had been taken ashore from Co To Island.
In the meantime, the National Steering for Flood and Storm Prevention and Control said that heavy rains had enlarged to inundate many areas in the northern region on Saturday.
Floodwaters overflowed into many houses, rendered landslide, damaged crops and blocked traffic in Yen Bai, Bac Giang, Hanoi, Nam Dinh, Hai Phong and Thai Binh.
According to the National Hydro Meteorological Forecasting Center, heavy rain has surged water level in Thuong, Cau and Luc Nam rivers.
Rainfall will continue increasing until August 3 with precipitation expected to reach 300-400mm in some places.
The center warned of flash floods in mountainous provinces such as Lang Son, Ha Giang, Cao Bang, Lao Cai, Son La and Yen Bai.
Lai Chau province has reported a young mother and her baby buried to death under landslide debris in Nam Nhun commune while she was working in mountain field.
Drenching rain caused a flashflood to sweep away Huoi Cu reservoir dam in Tuan Giao district, Dien Bien Province affecting hundreds of households in the lower reaches on Saturday.
Torrential rain has caused 29 dead and missing in the northern region so far.
